“Do you have any strategies for healing deep cuts on the surface of the skin, that threaten to leave permanent and horribly unsightly scars? I had an injury last Monday evening.” -Maynard

Dear Maynard,

Wild rosehip seed oil is remarkable for its ability to reduce the appearance of scars, and it can be applied daily once the scab has come off.  See the pictures of scar reduction in this blog from a clinical study done in Chile in 1978.

The first major study documenting rosehip seed oil’s unique ability for skin regeneration was done five years later, in 1983, at University of Concepcion, a prestigious university in Chile. In this two-year study, rosehip seed oil was applied to 180 patients with surgical, traumatic and post-burning scars, and to a group suffering from premature aging. Pictures were taken over a few months of continuous application, showing how effectively the oil worked in helping attenuating scars and wrinkles, in preventing advancement of premature aging, and in regaining lost skin natural color and tone.

Since that time many other studies have been done in other universities, both in Chile and other countries, and all showed the same outstanding effects.

Mirea Ellis says she finds the pure, organic, unrefined rosehip seed oil from Chile works better than refined oils, or any combination with other oils, or creams, which have a larger molecular size and do not penetrate as deep for as effective results. The best quality wild rosehip seed oil is thick, rich, deep orange in color and has what I call a “dark” aroma, not like the flowery smell of roses. You only need a few drops for each area, which makes it economical, and should apply it twice a day.

The reason it is so effective is its unique types and combination of nutrients not found in other oils, including trans retinoic acid. The reason you will not find unrefined (nutrient dense) rosehip seed oil commonly available is because it does not have a long shelf life, and most manufacturers will not carry such a product. It is also one of the more expensive oils, so cutting an unrefined version with other oils makes a cheaper product for manufacturers.

Ingredients:

20 ounces (about 3 cups) fresh or frozen organic strawberries
12 ounces soft silken tofu
1 tablespoon tahini
1/2 cup brown rice syrup
3 1/2 tablespoons agar flakes
1/2 cup organic apple juice
Pinch of salt

Directions:

1. Puree the strawberries in a blender.
2. Add the tofu, tahini and rice syrup. Blend until very smooth. Set aside.
3. In a small saucepan combine the juice and agar flakes and bring to a simmer, stirring until the agar is dissolved (usually about 5 minutes).
4. Pour the apple juice / agar mixture into the blender with the other ingredients and blend again for a few more minutes.
5. Pour the mixture into either parfait glasses or dessert bowls and refrigerate until firm, about 2 hours. You can also pour the mixture into a larger bowl or baking dish and refrigerate, then scoop out portions as desired.

This dessert was adapted from the wonderful healthy desserts book “Love, Eric” by master pastry chef Eric Lechasseur, where he uses the mousse in a luscious Strawberry Mousse Cake. Eric has created meals for Madonna, Sting, Tobey Maguire and other health-conscious stars. The small but incredibly useful book “Dying to Look Good” by Christine Hoza Farlow is an ingredients dictionary, so you can bring it along to the stores and see if an ingredient is toxic or safe.

To truly transform your health and appearance, you need to have ingredients that are safe and beneficial. You won’t find a regular commercial product that’s as powerfully rejuvenating as real food and herbs, when applied to your skin. The drawbacks for manufacturers? What does this quote from John Lennon mean to you? “You’ve got to be good looking cause you’re so hard to see.” Junk food and beauty products that instantly cover up rather than change our looks are temporarily comforting. Wouldn’t it be better to love yourself and your life? If you don’t, you’ll keep going back to old buying habits and lifestyle patterns. Spend some time finding out what’s really important to you and go after it! Learn to be comfortable expressing yourself, and then you’ll be able to stick to, and reap the benefits of, healthy choices.

Ingredients (serves 4)

3 cups water (or optional “dashi” broth – see below)
1 cup diced onion
1 cup diced celery
Kernels sliced from 5 large ears of corn
Pinch of salt
2 teaspoons white miso
Green part of 1 scallion, sliced thin, for garnish

Directions:

1. In a saucepan, combine 1/4 cup of the water or dashi broth with the onion, celery and pinch of salt. Cook over high heat for a few minutes, stirring, until the onions are translucent.
2. Add the rest of the water or dashi broth and corn, cover, and simmer for 15 minutes on low heat.
3. Remove half the soup and blend in blender until smooth
4. Pour blended soup back into pot and bring back to low simmer.
5. Dilute white miso with some soup until thin liquid then mix into soup in pot.
6. Simmer for 2 minutes.
7. Ladle into serving bowls and garnish with scallion.

Optional Dashi Broth

1. This broth not only gives a richer flavor to the soup, it provides an abundance of healthy minerals, trace minerals and other nutrients found only in sea vegetables.
2. Put 3  1/2 cups of water and a 4 inch strip of dried kombu sea vegetable into a pot. Bring to a boil, reduce heat, and simmer, covered for 20 minutes.
3. After the broth is made you can slice the kombu fine and use in any other dish.

Kukicha tea is a great substitute for regular tea, because it contains only 1/10 the amount of caffeine found in green tea, and is the most alkalizing compared to other teas. Made from the roasted stems and twigs of the same bush that produces regular tea, it is picked when the caffeine is lowest and the calcium is highest. The health benefits plus its rich “dark” flavor has made it a favorite among health-conscious people. You can either buy it ground fine in convenient tea bags, or brew your own from the whole twigs, which is a very economical way to enjoy this beverage.

Ingredients – makes four 8 oz servings

2 cups of kukicha tea, pre-chilled
2 cups of cold organic, unfiltered apple juice (or other fruit juice of your preference)

Directions:

Mix together and serve, either by itself or with any of the options below.

Options:
Instead of apple juice use any other kind of organic juice or nectar
A squeeze of organic lemon or other citrus fruit
A mint leaf for each cup
Lemon zest
